Stroller Car Seat Frame
Double trailers come in two different designs: side by side or tandem. Given the number of questions about this subject on various forums, parents, parents seem to be confused about which to pick and understandably so: there are no easy answers. Both designs have their advantages and disadvantages, so it depends on your specific needs and priorities.
Let us examine the advantages and limitations of both side-by-side and tandem style Strollers:
The seats in tandem trailers are by definition one in front of the other, which gives a much narrower framework. The obvious advantage of the tandem design is that it is easy to get through doors, corridors, islands, sidewalks and other narrow passages.
From a children's socialization perspective, your children tend to interact less with each other in a tandem pram because they usually do not get to see each other and will not be within range of each other. This can be a good or a bad thing depending on what you're looking for! Interacting less can mean longer naps and fewer matches, but it also means that they will not be able to play or communicate with each other so much. The amount of interaction you want can also depend on their respective ages: Twins can be a better side-by-side while siblings of different ages can be happier in a tandem stroller so the baby to sleep while the oldest player.
Note that any tandem stroller models can now flip the seats so that children meet each other, or both face back to see Mum (for children). This is a great feature that makes such a tandem strollers a very attractive choice.
A side-by-side design is more difficult to get through narrow doors, but is generally easier to maneuver. Not only side-by-side strollers tend to be lighter, but the width between the handles make it easy to turn on a dime. In contrast, tries to make a u-turn with a tandem stroller in a crowded supermarket aisle can be a real challenge given the length of the stroller and the weight distribution. And it's even worse when the older heavier child is in front, which of course they will want to be!
For tasks where you need to get in and out of a car, be aware that side-by-side Strollers tend to be smaller when folded, and since they are also often easier, it is easier to fit them into the boot of a car.
So before spending $ 500 on the coolest looking double wagon out there, make sure to factor in how maneuverable and compact you need it to be, and whether you want your kids to communicate or leave each other alone!
